Dear Congressman Delgado:
We are residents of the 19th District in NY. We urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 2407, which would end military assistance to Israel unless Israel ends its pattern of injury to the human rights of 500 to 700 Palestinian children each year.
H.R. 2407 (also known as the “No Way to Treat a Child” bill) cites UNICEF and others who have documented abuse by the Israeli military police of the human rights of 50,000 Palestinian children since 1967. To this day, Israel continues to:
- Arrest children by rousting them out of bed at night
- Lead them blindfolded and sleep-deprived to harsh interrogations, often with physical harm
- Hold them without access to their parents or an attorney for long periods
- Press them to sign “confessions” in Hebrew, a language they do not know, or to accuse their friends of misconduct.
Such treatment of children is already illegal, and existing US law prohibits giving military assistance to countries that treat children this way. But US governments of both parties have failed to notice that the law is not enforced. H.R. 2407 would fix that, and we want our congressman to join the leaders of this effort. Please be a leader of conscience and sign on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 2407.
